While countries across Europe will have local laws that apply to ship and boat navigation, there is a common requirement worldwide for all leisure, commercial and military vessels to conform to the IMO International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. As Steve Austin, Senior Policy Lead at the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) explains: "The COLREGs apply to all vessels, there is no differentiation between coded and non-coded vessels. Should the whistles prove not to conform then they will need to be modified or changed."
"Whistles should conform to the performance in COLREGs, Appendix III and the appropriate parts of IEC 60945 to EN60945 which deal with the marine operating environment."
All Kahlenberg products meet or exceed these requirements. Many other new and currently installed sound signals are non-compliant and might be breaching maritime law and invalidating insurance cover.
M-611 Sound and Light Signal Controller
The Kahlenberg M-611 Sound and Light Signal Controller is a rugged panel offering complex automatic control of the marine sound and light signals required by IMO and SOLAS.
This M-611 controls automated restricted visibility codes, manoeuvring codes and general alarm and abandon ship codes per IMO and SOLAS requirements. It can control multiple horns, the Morse light, the ship's bell and gong and can be configured for use with external alarm systems and sound surveillance systems.
The Kahlenberg M-611 Sound and Light Signal Controller is constructed in black hardcoat aluminium to military specification. Multiple M-611s can be harnessed together and external switches can be also connected to it.
The unit is offered in 24VDC and 120V/240V 50Hz/60Hz AC versions. It is capable of powering up to 2A load. It is protected to IP65 and can operate in a temperature range between -40°C to 85°C.
Night use is aided by the use of red backlighting and a dimmable screen.
